Een zalige Kerst!

Lieve vrienden, 

Het regent pijpenstelen, ons huisje loopt stilaan leeg, gedachten gaan uit naar familie en vrienden... maar ondanks dit alles is het ook hier bijna Kerstmis! Het wordt dit jaar een speciale Kerst, anders dan alle anderen. Door het in een vreemd land te beleven valt het me namelijk op hoezeer Kerstmis een familie- en traditiegebeuren is. Elk land, en daarenboven elke familie, heeft zo zijn eigen gewoontes om dit feest van licht, vreugde en liefde samen te vieren. Dat is althans wat onze vele gesprekken hierover hier in huis ons leren. Heel interessant en verrijkend te horen hoe verschillend mensen dit kunnen vieren: verschillend en tegelijkertijd een in de boodschap die ze hiermee belichamen. Ik weet niet meer waar, maar las een van de voorbije dagen de volgende gedachte, die me diep raakte. Wat ziet God wanneer Hij vandaag naar de wereld kijkt? In welke wereld wil Hij werkelijk aanwezig zijn? Wel, als ik denk aan al die families, vrienden en zelfs onbekenden die op kerstdag verenigd zijn, dan denk ik dat God wel even glimlacht en oprecht gelukkig is met dit hoopvolle beeld... En dan kan ik de gedachte in deze popsong enkel ten volle beamen: "I wish it could be Christmas every day!"

Ik wens jullie allen dan ook een dergelijke Kerst toe, waarin je mag genieten van elkaars aanwezigheid, gedragen door de liefdevolle aanwezigheid van een pasgeboren Kind in ons midden! 

Hoe ga ik mijn Kerst hier vieren? Wel, ik heb nog een halve dag werk te gaan, en dan is het ook voor mij even kerstvakantie, dan ben ik vrij tot en met de 1e januari! :-) Ik kijk hier echt naar uit: net zoals al mijn collega's voel ik echt dat het tijd is om er even helemaal uit te zijn, om even de knop te kunnen omdraaien. Wat best moeilijk is, wetende dat velen van onze clienten een minder vreugdevolle, of zelfs helemaal geen, Kerst zullen hebben. Maar we hebben het allemaal nodig, om er in het nieuwe jaar weer volledig te kunnen invliegen! Dus ik troost mij met de gedachte dat het in die zin ook hen ten goede komt...

Maar goed, maandagnamiddag vertrek ik dan samen met mijn enige huisgenoot die ook hier blijft naar de universitaire parochie, waar we een paar dagen zullen logeren en de kerstdagen doorbrengen met de jezuiet die dit runt, en met alle studenten die niet naar huis gaan. We hebben geen idee wat er op het programma staat, afspraken maken lijkt nogal moeilijk, maar hopen daar mooie dagen te beleven! We zijn in elk geval al heel erg dankbaar voor de uitnodiging die we kregen, dat we daar zomaar mee Kerst mogen gaan vieren. Daarna zullen we een paar dagen thuis zijn, en enkel leuke, kerstachtige dingen doen, hebben we onszelf beloofd! Zo plannen we naar de cinema te gaan, een dagje de bergen in te trekken, gezelschapsspelletjes te spelen, een aantal mensen uit te nodigen, films te kijken, ... Allemaal ontspannende dingen, die op het eerste zicht zo banaal lijken, maar waar we anders niet echt tijd voor hebben, dus nu eigenlijk echt naar uitkijken. De 31e trekken we dan tenslotte nog voor 2 dagen naar Liverpool waar we onze co-gemeenschap van JVC-vrijwilligers gaan opzoeken, om met z'n zessen het nieuwe jaar in te gaan. 

Zoals ik dus al zei: een Kerst heel anders dan de andere, maar eentje die ik zeker niet snel zal vergeten, en die me veel verrassingen en mooie momenten zal opleveren denk ik.
Laat me tenslotte afsluiten met de volgende kerstreflectie die ik de voorbije week tegenkwam bij het opstellen van de bibliotheek voor Boaz. Ze raakte me diep, vooral wanneer je weet dat de vorm van het document echt waarheidsgetrouw is. Ik heb ondertussen heel wat dossiers gelezen, en dit is effectief de wijze waarop een asielaanvraag wordt geweigerd. Het is op basis van dergelijke redenen dat een afwijzing wordt gebaseerd. Als je het mij vraagt: vreselijk en onmenselijk.

You have applied for asylum in the United Kingdom and and asked to be recognised as a refuge under the 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees (Geneva Convention) on the basis that it would be contrary to the United Kingdom’s obligations under the Geneva Convention for you to be removed from or required to leave the United Kingdom. You claim to have a well founded fear of persecution in Palestine. Your application has not been considered by the Secretary of State personally but by an official acting on his behalf.

In your interview you had difficulty explaining the reasons you claim to have suffered persecution. You claim to have suffered persecution because you are descended from David. In the alternative it is because you are the son of God. It is noted that in your screening interview you named Joseph and Mary as your parents. You also claim to have suffered persecution because of your preaching activities.

It is considered that even the basic personal information you have provided about your family is inconsistent and therefore casts doubt on your entire claim. It is further noted that you have failed to provide birth certificates or other documents that might be expected to prove you are descended from David or that you are the son of Mary, Joseph and/or God. While it is accepted that asylum seekers may have difficulty producing documentary proof, you claim to have 11 close supporters who could easily send you such documents.

Because of your family background you claim to have narrowly avoided being killed soon after birth when a local warlord called Herod ordered the slaughter of the innocents. It is noted that some country information sources confirm that such an event took place. However, your claim to be the intended victim is rejected. If you had been the intended victim and Herod was as powerful as you claim then you would be dead by now. It is implausible that you could have escaped in the way that you claim. This aspect of your account is rejected as being implausible.

It is noted that you and your family fled Herod’s territory. If you were a genuine refugee you would have claimed asylum in the first safe country. This casts further doubt on the veracity of your claim.

You claim to have been involved in a number of extremely implausible events, including walking on water and moving a very large boulder while technically dead. Your representative, a qualified and accredited Church of England adviser, submitted that these miracles are allegorical and are in fact complex metaphors. It is noted that you make no such claim yourself. These aspects of your claim are rejected and undermine your general credibility. It is noted that you claim that these events exacerbated your persecution. As the events are rejected, so too is your claim to have been persecuted because of

them.

It is noted that you claim to have travelled to the UK on a previous occasion with Joseph of Arimathea. As your representative conceded the dates simply do not add up. Further, if you had travelled to the UK previously you have not explained why you did not claim asylum previously. If you were genuinely in fear of your life because of your family background it is reasonable to have expected you to claim asylum at the earliest opportunity. This casts further doubt on the veracity of your claim.

It is further noted that your fear is of the Pharisees. They appear to be non-state actors. It is therefore considered reasonable that you relocate within Palestine. Further, it is considered that you have failed to avail yourself of the protection of the local authorities and therefore that you will have a sufficiency of protection if you are returned. You claim that Pilate ‘washed his hands’ of you but this does not indicate an inability on the part of state authorities to offer protection, the test established by the case of Horvath.

Your claim for asylum is rejected. You are requested to leave the UK. If you do not leave voluntarily your departure will be enforced.
